Painting Fun

After making our rockets we painted them. Those who were waiting to paint were able to choose to do an activity in either of the primary 2 classrooms, or in the shared area. It was good to get to work with the ladybirds and to have a go at some different activities.

Explorers Day

Both the P2 classes focused on space for explorers day, as it connects with our topic of flight. We spent some time learning about Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin's exploration to the moon on Apollo 11, and designed our own spacecrafts out of junk.
Learning about the first trip to the moon

Having fun playing 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?' to see
if we can remember some facts.

Looking after ourselves

We worked with the P2 Ladybirds to learn about medicine. We spoke about how we know if someone is unwell and what we can do if we feel ill. Sometimes when we are ill we need to rest and drink lots of water but sometimes we need to go to the doctor who might give us medicine. We were very good at answering questions and we know to be very careful when taking medicines and that they should only be given to us by adults.

A Taste of Tanzania

Orkney has been paired with Tanzania and the Cayman Islands for the Commonwealth Games. We were very fortunate to have Hellen, who has lived in Tanzania and worked in a school there, visit us to tell us a little bit about the country.

We looked at the Tanzanian Flag
We found Tanzania on a map of Africa
We leaned some phrases in Swahili.
Hakuna matata really does mean no worries!
We learned a little bit about the Maasai people
We got to ask some questions.
"What is the weather like?"
"Are there hyenas there?"
A Tanzanian house
The school of St Jude where Hellen worked.
It started with one teacher and 3 children.
There are now 1600 children who attend the school.
Inside a classroom. There can be up to 60 or 70 children in a class with only one teacher
The classrooms have windows but they are not fitted with glass.
The wage for some of those who work is 1 pound a day.
Helen asked some of the children in Primary 1,2 and 3 how they would spend 1 pound.

The children who learn at St Jude are very happy to be there.
We enjoyed watching the children and staff of St Jude
dance to "Happy", showing us how happy they were and how much
they appreciated the opportunity to go to school.

Thank you, Hellen. We really enjoyed hearing and learning about Tanzania.
