4 in a row

We are having some revision weeks in maths so there will be no more maths homework in P2 bumblebees. We played a game of connect 4 to practise counting up money. The aim was to put 4 counters on 4 pictures of coins and add up the total. If you added it up correctly your counters stayed on the board. The winner was the person with the most counters.

Tiling patterns

We have been fitting 2D shapes together to make tiling patterns. We understand that for shapes to tile together there must not be any gaps between shapes. We have worked hard to  make sure there are no gaps in our patterns by seeing which shapes fit together.

Area

We are learning about area in maths.

We started by using different materials to work out the area of surfaces around our classroom.

We found out that it is much harder to work out the area of a shape or space that is circular.

We then played a game in groups where one person drew a shape and the other 2 people guessed how many cubes it would take to fill the space. The person with the closest guess got to draw the next shape.

The challenge at the construction area this week is to fill areas marked with masking tape to see what their area is in cubes, blocks or cups.

Sharing Sweets

We are learning to divide by sharing. Today we used sweets to help us divide and shared them out evenly. We understand that for the groups to be even they each have to have the same amount.

Measuring length

This week we have been measuring the length of different things around the room using hands, feet, cubes and other things too.

The children drew lines in their books and guessed how many cubes long it would be. They then checked their guesses my measuring them with cubes.

Balancing act

In maths we are working with weight. We have spent some time trying to estimate the weight of different items in comparison to cubes or paintbrushes, for example.
5 crayons are the same weight as an apple

8 paintbrushes weigh the same as an apple

It takes 35 cubes to balance the scales against an apple

26 dominoes and a nectarine weigh about the same
We had a go at using our hands as scales, and tried to match a piece of play dough that we thought felt the same weight as different objects. We tested our guesses on the scales.

Some very close to balancing!
