Brush, brush, brush your teeth

We enjoyed a visit from Karyn Tait today who reminded us about how to look after our teeth. She brought Harry with her to demonstrate. We got to practise on Harry's friends, remembering to brush gently and in circles.

She then showed us a plate of sugary foods that it is best to eat at mealtimes if we are going to have them. She showed us a plate of healthy foods that are good to have as snacks. We got a shock when she showed us the number of teaspoons of sugar in some of our favourite treats!

We all went home with smiles on our faces!

SSPCA

We had a visit from Carol who works for the SSPCA in Orkney. She told us lots of interesting things about the animals the SSPCA care for and the different jobs they do. We saw some pictures of animals and heard how they were helped by the SSPCA.

Keeping healthy

We have been learning about what keeps us healthy and the importance of washing our hands to keep germs away.

First of all one person started with their hands covered in glitter; the glitter represented germs. That person shook hands with others and they shook hands with more people and so on. We understand how easily germs can be passed if we do not take care to wash our hands properly.

We then washed our hands following a set of instructions.
Turn on the warm tap and rinse your hands
Use soap and wash palm to palm
Between fingers
Thumbs
Back of hands
Fingertips on palms
Rinse off the soap
Turn off the tap
Shake off as much water as you can
Dry your hands
We are making posters to put up at the sinks to remind people to wash their hands properly.

LEPRA

We did our LEPRA workout today to raise money to help people living with leprosy. Steph did a dance workout with the Primary 1 and 2 classes and the children put in lots of effort, earning the money they had raised.

Wild flower planting

We were very fortunate to get to do some wild flower planting on Friday as a continuation of our fundraising for bumblebees in term 1.

Lindsey Taylor and Eileen Summers told us about some of the flowers that
have nectar in them and are good for bees.

Some of the flowers we planted were primroses, red campion, kidney vetch, self heal and red clover.

We then played a game where there were bumblebees who had to collect nectar from flowers. The children who were flowers had a ball to represent nectar. The first time we played, the flowers were spread out and the bees used up lots of energy collecting the nectar.

The second time we played, the flowers were much closer together so the bees were able to collect the nectar much more quickly without getting too tired.

Lindsey explained that we needed to push the flowers up out of the pots and place them into the little holes in the area that Conrad kindly weeded for us.

As in the game, we planted the flowers close together so that bees who take the nectar won't have to use so much energy moving from flower to flower.
