It's party week! The Primary 1 and 2 classes had their party this week and it was great fun. We played lots of party games and enjoyed some juice and ice cream cones.

Rock Around the Flock
Last week was the Nursery to Primary 3 Christmas show - 'Rock Around the Flock'. The children all did really well, remembering lines and when to stand up and sit down, singing all the songs loudly and clearly and sitting quietly when someone was talking. All the rehearsals and hard work paid off and they did a great job of telling the story of the Nativity. Everybody played a valuable part in making the show a great success - well done! Here are a few pictures from the dress rehearsal.

Road safety
Some of the girls from Primary 6 came to give us a presentation on how to act safely and be seen when out and about during these dark days. They were very helpful and answered any questions we had.
Authors Live - Mairi Hedderwick
Mairi Hedderwick did an Authors Live session for Book Week Scotland on the BBC website. Because our topic was Katie Morag last term, we were very keen to tune in to listen to her talk about her books and tell us one of the stories. The primary 1, 2 and 3 classes got together to watch and listen to Mairi tell us about Katie Morag and how she came to life in the stories. She also told us the story of Katie Morag and the Tiresome Ted, with some exciting extra details. I think Mairi could have heard the round of applause she got from the children!
Book Week Scotland
For book week Scotland, the school suggested a number of activities we could get involved with in class. When we heard 4 short rings of the bell, we had to drop everything and read. The pupils followed this instruction very well and enjoyed reading a book of their choice aloud, by themselves or in a small group. Each class was also set the challenge of creating a book cover for their classroom door. We took a vote for a favourite book, and 'Superworm' by Julia Donaldson came out on top.
Past Times - classrooms
Maths games
think about numbers and maths topics in different ways.
To help us think about place value and the order of numbers,
we did 100 square jigsaws.
The children worked together to think about where numbers
would go and how the pieces would slot together.

Past Times topic
Our topic this term is Past Times. As an introduction to this, the Primary 2 Bumblebees sorted a selection of toys and made a pile old toys and a pile of new toys. We discussed how we knew the old toys were from long ago and compared them to the toys we get nowadays.

Busy Bee Bake Sale
On Thursday the 10th October we held our 'Sponsor a Bee' bake sale. All members of the primary 2 classes were busy bees and lent a hand, either helping to set out the baking or helping to sell it. All the cakes looked absolutely delicious and helped us to raise £98.80 so far. Thank you all for your kind donations of baking and spending money!
Save the Bees!!
To help raise awareness of the importance of bumblebees and how to help protect them, both primary 2 classes worked together to prepare and present a 'Save the Bees' assembly. Everybody did very well and spoke using loud, clear voices so the whole school could hear them. They were very good at doing the actions for the songs too!

Floating and Sinking
and the Tiresome Ted. Tiresome Ted was thrown into
the sea but was found again because he floated. We tested some things in class to see if they would float or sink.
Katie Morag Delivers the Mail
We were very lucky to get to do some drama based on our topic. The Primary 2 classes helped Katie Morag deliver the mail. We went on a visit to Grannie Island's house and even got to go in her tractor.

Island Designs
After learning all about the Isle of Struay everyone designed their own island. Their challenge was to make sure their island included all of the following: roads, houses, a pier, a shop, a school, fields and a community building. Each island has its own unique name too and we are very proud to display them outside our classroom.

Ladybirds and Bumblebees
Primary 7 Helpers
After reading all about Katie Morag and the Isle of Struay we decided to design our own islands (photos coming soon). Everybody came up with a name for their island and we were very grateful to the Primary Sevens for coming in to our class to show us how to use the laptops and help us type up our island names and change the colour and style of the writing.
Thank you
Primary 7s!
Katie Morag display
We have been reading the Katie Morag stories to help us learn about islands. We have worked really hard to make our own map of Struay for our classroom wall and each person made a place or a person from the story.
We can keep adding to our map as we learn more about the characters and stories from the Isle of Struay.
