Keeping healthy

We have been learning about what keeps us healthy and the importance of washing our hands to keep germs away.

First of all one person started with their hands covered in glitter; the glitter represented germs. That person shook hands with others and they shook hands with more people and so on. We understand how easily germs can be passed if we do not take care to wash our hands properly.

We then washed our hands following a set of instructions.
Turn on the warm tap and rinse your hands
Use soap and wash palm to palm
Between fingers
Thumbs
Back of hands
Fingertips on palms
Rinse off the soap
Turn off the tap
Shake off as much water as you can
Dry your hands
We are making posters to put up at the sinks to remind people to wash their hands properly.

LEPRA

We did our LEPRA workout today to raise money to help people living with leprosy. Steph did a dance workout with the Primary 1 and 2 classes and the children put in lots of effort, earning the money they had raised.

Problem Solving

We are learning to draw pictures to help us solve a problem. The problem was to find out how many combinations of 2 cubes we could make from 4 different coloured cubes.

We worked out that it was best to do it in organised way and do all the combinations with blue first, then all the combinations with green first and so on.

Making blood.

We made our own blood to learn about the different things that are in it.

First of all we poured in yellow liquid to act as the plasma.

Then we added food colour soaked cheerios to act as the red blood cells.

Next we added marshmallows to act as white blood cells.

Finally we put in raisins to act as platelets.

After we made the blood, we had to show what we had learned, and remember what each each part of the blood does.

The Hansel and Gretel Puppet Show

We were treated to a visit from David and his puppet theatre. The school enjoyed meeting the Naughty Puppet, who some of the class remembered from last year.
The Naught Puppet did not say sorry for being rude so he had to go away. We were then joined by Hansel and Gretel who told us their story.
Spot the puppets!

A Taste of Tanzania

Orkney has been paired with Tanzania and the Cayman Islands for the Commonwealth Games. We were very fortunate to have Hellen, who has lived in Tanzania and worked in a school there, visit us to tell us a little bit about the country.

We looked at the Tanzanian Flag
We found Tanzania on a map of Africa
We leaned some phrases in Swahili.
Hakuna matata really does mean no worries!
We learned a little bit about the Maasai people
We got to ask some questions.
"What is the weather like?"
"Are there hyenas there?"
A Tanzanian house
The school of St Jude where Hellen worked.
It started with one teacher and 3 children.
There are now 1600 children who attend the school.
Inside a classroom. There can be up to 60 or 70 children in a class with only one teacher
The classrooms have windows but they are not fitted with glass.
The wage for some of those who work is 1 pound a day.
Helen asked some of the children in Primary 1,2 and 3 how they would spend 1 pound.

The children who learn at St Jude are very happy to be there.
We enjoyed watching the children and staff of St Jude
dance to "Happy", showing us how happy they were and how much
they appreciated the opportunity to go to school.

Thank you, Hellen. We really enjoyed hearing and learning about Tanzania.
