Wingspans

For our flight topic we have been learning about what wingspan means, and have been finding out the wingspan of different kinds of birds. We had a go at working in groups to measure each other's arm spans.

Handwork

Every Thursday we are lucky enough to get to handwork with ladies from around the community who volunteer to give up their time. We are grateful to the ladies who come in to help us with our sewing and introduce us to new stitches to use on our mats.

Let the wind blow

Understanding how birds fly is quite difficult but we had a go at blowing straws to show the power of wind. We also made pretend aerofoil feathers to show how the wind pushes feathers up, helping birds to fly.

Auld Lang Syne

As part of out Robert Burns discussion in class we sang 2 verses of Auld Lang Syne. The words are tricky to learn and remember but everyone really enjoyed participating.

Practising take aways

In maths we have been working on take away sums. Last week we set up 4 stations, and each station had a different material to use to help work out the answers to take away sums. We had counters, marbles, cubes and an abacus. Each group had a different set of sums for each station.

Aiming and Passing Skills

For our extra PE this term we are focusing on aiming and passing skills. This week after our warm-up we had a go at aiming by throwing beanbags to land in hoops. The children were good at this and challenged themselves by taking more steps backwards after getting the beanbag in the hoop a few times. We then practised passing to a partner and counted how many times in a row the beanbag was passed before being dropped. We might try and beat our scores next week!

Patchwork Quilt

Welcome back to term 3! When discussing past times traditions, we read the story of The Patchwork Quilt and spoke about how old pieces of material would be kept and used for something else, possibly a quilt. Thank you for sending in pieces of unused material for us to have our own patchwork quilt in the classroom. Over the holidays all the pieces were sewn together to make a lovely quilt, and the primary twos are proud to use it in their reading corner, to make it nice and cosy.
