Wild flower planting

We were very fortunate to get to do some wild flower planting on Friday as a continuation of our fundraising for bumblebees in term 1.

Lindsey Taylor and Eileen Summers told us about some of the flowers that
have nectar in them and are good for bees.

Some of the flowers we planted were primroses, red campion, kidney vetch, self heal and red clover.

We then played a game where there were bumblebees who had to collect nectar from flowers. The children who were flowers had a ball to represent nectar. The first time we played, the flowers were spread out and the bees used up lots of energy collecting the nectar.

The second time we played, the flowers were much closer together so the bees were able to collect the nectar much more quickly without getting too tired.

Lindsey explained that we needed to push the flowers up out of the pots and place them into the little holes in the area that Conrad kindly weeded for us.

As in the game, we planted the flowers close together so that bees who take the nectar won't have to use so much energy moving from flower to flower.

Making blood.

We made our own blood to learn about the different things that are in it.

First of all we poured in yellow liquid to act as the plasma.

Then we added food colour soaked cheerios to act as the red blood cells.

Next we added marshmallows to act as white blood cells.

Finally we put in raisins to act as platelets.

After we made the blood, we had to show what we had learned, and remember what each each part of the blood does.

Heart and lungs

We have been learning about the heart and lungs. We started to look at how they work together by acting out the movement of blood around our body.

When we breathe in we get oxygen from the air around us.
The heart pumps blood filled with oxygen around our bodies.

The oxygen is taken to our muscles in our red blood cells.

Our muscles use up the oxygen in the blood.
The blood goes back to the heart to get more oxygen.
The blood can then go back to the muscles.

Spring chicken!

We enjoyed a visit from 3 furry friends today! We got to hold tiny chicks, newly hatched 2 days ago. We asked some questions, and found out that they are hens' chicks. We found out that there are 18 altogether and that after 2 more weeks it will be easier to tell if they are boys or girls. The boys' combs will be longer than the girls. We held our hands in a bowl shape so that we did not hold the chicks too tightly.

Tanzanian drumming

In music the class have been doing some Tanzanian drumming, using various types of percussion instruments. The children did a good job of following a rhythm and keeping the beat, and adding in shoulder movements in time to the music.

Tag rugby

We had our last rugby session this week. After the warm up we played tag bulldogs and stadium ball. At the end, the children played a proper game of tag rugby, working in teams to try and score a try against the opposition.
