Measuring length

This week we have been measuring the length of different things around the room using hands, feet, cubes and other things too.

The children drew lines in their books and guessed how many cubes long it would be. They then checked their guesses my measuring them with cubes.

Beanbag throwing

In our PE time this week we worked with the ladybirds to practise beanbag throwing for sports day next week. If the beanbag landed in the first hoop it counted for 1 point. There were 2 points for it landing in the middle hoop and 3 for it landing in the furthest away hoop.

The Incredible Itch and You can't take me!

We enjoyed another drama session with Mrs Linklater. As a warm up we did the Incredible Itch. The itch was spread around the room. The itchiness went from 1 to 10, getting itchier and itchier as the numbers went up.

We then played "You can't take me!". In groups the children were given a room in the house and had to get in to the shape of something in that room. Mrs Linklater was going to take things out of the room if there was no good reason for it to be there. Primary 2 had to give a clue for us to guess what item they were and why they should be kept in the room.

The children gave good clues for us to guess. Because we guessed correctly, they got to stay in the room.

Afterwards, we did the same game with parts of the body. We had to give a reason why the part of the body we were being could not be taken out.

Organs

We have been learning about the different organs in our body. To show knowledge and understanding of where the organs are in the body, the challenge was to use information books to find diagrams of the human body that show where each organ is, and use these to help create our own diagrams.

Balancing act

In maths we are working with weight. We have spent some time trying to estimate the weight of different items in comparison to cubes or paintbrushes, for example.
5 crayons are the same weight as an apple

8 paintbrushes weigh the same as an apple

It takes 35 cubes to balance the scales against an apple

26 dominoes and a nectarine weigh about the same
We had a go at using our hands as scales, and tried to match a piece of play dough that we thought felt the same weight as different objects. We tested our guesses on the scales.

Some very close to balancing!

Relay race

We worked with the ladybirds to practise our relay race for Sports Day. The children worked well together and followed all the instructions exactly.

Problem Solving

We are learning to draw pictures to help us solve a problem. The problem was to find out how many combinations of 2 cubes we could make from 4 different coloured cubes.

We worked out that it was best to do it in organised way and do all the combinations with blue first, then all the combinations with green first and so on.
