More parachutes

Here are a couple of videos of our parachutes in action. You might have to tilt your head as I can't seem to rotate them!

Parachutes

Today we worked with the Ladybirds to make parachutes for our topic. We had to design them using a plastic bag, string, sellotape and a fisherprice person! We spoke about how people wear parachutes when jumping out of a plane as it helps them to have a slower, softer landing.

Story plays

This week our reading challenge is to act out stories in different ways. Here we have some of our class reading the story play of Little Rabbit Foo Foo with different people's lines in different colours.

Topic challenge

We are learning about flightless birds for our topic. In groups, our challenge was to read the information we were given about the bird we chose and make a poster about that bird. On the poster we had to make a title, create a picture of the bird using different materials and share some facts about the bird.

Visit from the nursery

We had a visit from the nursery children who were on a hunt for numbers. We were very good at making them feel welcome in our classroom and helping them to find numbers.

Trip to the airport

Checking out the arrivals and departures board

What a super afternoon we had when we visited the airport! We got to go to the fire station and find out about the different vehicles and equipment that would be used in an emergency. Then we went through security and got to have seat on board one of the planes.

Getting ready to tow the jet ski
The jet ski is needed because the airport
is so close to the sea
We got to sit on the jet ski too

Trying on the safety hats

Trying on the firefighters' jackets.
2 bumblebees in one!
The hose attachments are heavy!

We saw all the breathing apparatus
that has to be worn too
"Can I feel how heavy it is?"

Watching the fire engine leave the station
How many hoses can you see?
We were lucky enough to get to go
inside the fire engine

Welcome on board!

A big thank you to all the staff at the airport
who made our trip so interesting an enjoyable
A chance for some final questions in the departures lounge before
departing to the school

RSPB visit

This week we had a visit from Lindsey Taylor from the RSPB. She had lots of interesting things to tell us about birds we see in Orkney and we had a go at making suet balls. We are going to put 2 out each day so that we can enjoy seeing birds in the playground more often. We had a super time and asked some really good questions.

We found out that collared doves like to stick with a partner. They are not very good at building nests and sometimes their eggs fall out of the nests!
We found out that starlings are good at mimicking, and sometimes they even mimic phone ringtones and sirens.
We found out that song thrushes eat snails. To get the shells off them, they pick up the snail and drop it on a stone until the shell cracks and comes off.
